Hire cars
Hire cars are available in most towns but will almost certainly be more expensive than using bus and taxi for the same journey. Take your driving documents with you and check carefully the insurance arrangements for the hired car to make sure that collision damage waiver is included.

Hire cars can be much cheaper when purchased with a package and paid for before travelling from home. The lowest priced car such as a Fiat Panda cost £200 for a week when paid for in Crete, but only £100 when prebooked as part of a package holiday in 1993. Four-wheel drive vehicles cost half as much again but open the island up for exploration.
Speed limits are 100kilometre/hour on the main roads, 70kilometre/hour on other roads and 50kilometre/hour in built-up areas. The edges of roads are often falling away, unfenced and obstructed by stones falling from above or wandering goats. Landslips are common between January and March when the ground is at its wettest.
