3. Plakias to Souda Bay - Sweet Water Bay

Three kilometres on a mostly level but dusty track. This is a good route if you want a quiet swim at the far end. The wild palm trees at Sweet Water Bay give it a tropical atmosphere. Suitable for walkers or cyclists.

(a) From the middle of Plakias follow the seafront road west as it runs through the tavernas. Just to the west of the village some new hotels are dug back into the cliffs, but then the shore is largely unspoilt. This track is sandy in places and the occasional vehicle can throw up large clouds of dust.

30 min. After two kilometres the track moves a little inland. Take a sharp turn left back to the shore.

45 min. After a further kilometre the track ends at a couple of tavernas. The furthest is very attractively situated in a wooded valley with wild palm trees behind it. The beach here is quiet and sandy.

(b) To return by a slightly higher route take the track inland from Souda bay turning right at each main junction, following the signs for Geronimo‘s.

15 min. This taverna has an interesting collection of plants and superb views. Continue past Geronimo‘s with the track now level for almost one kilometre and then take a

30 min. right turn downhill. Turn right again on a hairpin bend which brings you back onto the coastal track. Fork left

55 min. for Plakias.
